An old Scandinavian rivalry will determine the first team to advance to the championship game.
Sweden came into the tournaments as a significant favorite with a talented roster. They were able to flex their muscle in the group stage, going undefeated to win Group B. However, they did have some issues with Latvia in the quarterfinals, almost squandering a 3-0 lead, but Tre Kronor hung on to win, advancing to the semifinals for the fourth straight tournament.
Sweden is trying to move on to the gold medal for the second straight year.
Finland has not played in the championship game since losing to Canada in 2022. Let by a good goaltender in Petteri Rimpinen, Suomi has a chance to change that story in Ottawa. Though they fell to Canada in their tournament opener, the Finns have reeled off four straight wins, including a hard-fought win over Slovakia in the quarterfinals.
Finland beat Sweden 1-0 in the semifinals in 2022.
The United States is on a quest to win the World Juniors title in back-to-back years for the first time in the country’s history. Despite losing to Finland in the group stage, their loaded offense, powered by Ryan Leonard and James Hagens, helped them win Group A and ran away with a 7-2 win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
Czechia is trying to get back to the gold medal game for the second time in three years. With so much future NHL potential, the Czechs have a team that is almost better than last year’s bronze medal-winning group. After finishing second in Group B, the team needed a goal from Adam Jecho in the final minute of regulation to beat hosts Canada in the quarters.
